ESG and Corporate Responsibility

Our commitment to positive impact

Our purpose as a business is to power people and organisations to fulfil their unique potential. This guides everything that we say and do and is at the heart of our ESG and Corporate Responsibility programme.

In January 2023, we were proud to join the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible business practices. Joining with over 15,000 leading global companies across 160 countries we are taking action to create a more sustainable future by aligning our ESG strategy with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - 10 universally accepted principles covering human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Our strategy focuses on six priority areas:

  • Engaging our people;
  • Championing equity, diversity and inclusion both within our organisation and with our clients;
  • Promoting the transition to a more sustainable world of work;
  • Reducing our environmental impact;
  • Supporting our local communities; and
  • Operating ethically and responsibly.

We have set robust, long-term targets for each priority area to hold ourselves accountable for driving meaningful change and delivering positive impact for our stakeholders.

Protecting the planet

We acknowledge the global threat posed by climate change and the urgent need for businesses to act. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and to safeguarding the planet.

From switching to renewable energy sources and reducing our business travel emissions, to investing in reforestation initiatives through the World Land Trust, we are taking a variety of actions to reach our target of net zero by 2040 across Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Powering people potential

Our business has a long history of giving back to the communities in which we operate. It’s part of our DNA and is evidenced by the passion of our people to give their time, energy and resources to champion local and global causes.

Our annual Global Charity Day is a big event in the Robert Walters calendar as our people enthusiastically take part in a broad range of fundraising and volunteering initiatives from marathon walks, sponsored runs and bake sales, to karaoke competition, food donation drives and community clean-ups all in support of local charities.

Transforming Tsavo with Global Angels

Since 2017, we have partnered with the Global Angels Foundation on their sustainable development project in Tsavo, Kenya which is transforming the livelihoods of the Itinyi Valley community. As drought and the effects of climate change increasingly affect the community, our year-round support is making an impact every day as we support the community to develop sustainable farming, infrastructure projects, small businesses, education for farmers and access to clean drinking water.

Employee story: Volunteering with Global Angels

Each year Robert Walters sends employee volunteers to Tsavo to work on key projects and see for themselves the transformation that is taking place on the ground. Hear from our Wellington-based consultant, Matt Mitchell, as he shares his experience of volunteering with Global Angels in Kenya.

Responsible Business

Being good corporate citizens has always been core to the way we do business, and we are committed to being a responsible, ethical business with strong policies, procedures and practices.

With robust ESG governance in place through our global ESG committee and diverse skills and experience on our Board and management committees we are committed to responsible oversight, accountability and transparency.

We are also passionate about supporting businesses and sectors that are driving the transition to a sustainable economy and actively seeking to improve their ESG impact. Using our own data-driven insights and research relating to ESG, recruitment and the future of work we are well placed to help businesses find and retain talent with the necessary ESG skills for the future.
